The Space In Between
Salma Samoud aka FunkyKid (she/her) is a Tunisian DJ and music producer based in Berlin.
Funkykid started DJing in 2021 during a workshop at La Fabrique Art Studio in Tunis. Moving to Berlin, she performed in clubs like OXI, Gretchen, and Zur Klappe, among others. She soon joined Eclat Crew Collective, a Berlin-based group that gives support and space for women, trans, and non-binary music producers. That is through Eclat Crew that she found support to hone her skills in music production. Her sound evolved to incorporate bits of experimental, trance, techno, and EBM, evolving into this kaleidoscopic, high-energy trance.
On September 27, 2024, she self-released her first single, The Space in Between, a song she did for her experiences as a migrant here in Germany. At the height of anti-Arab feelings, Funkykid fought depression and a feeling of incapacitation. This track became an act of defiance against the feelings of being thankful for and appreciative of the Berlin electronic music scene and the friends all over the world who stood by her through the challenges that the year had brought. There’s a sense of joyful rebellion underlying in this track.
Assala Shouk designed the artwork for the single, which is a visual representation of the energy, integrating Tunisian cultural elements such as the red pepper with a female figure styled in a typical Berlin raver. Funkykid represents vibrant colors, far from the dominant black aesthetic of Berlin’s club scene, celebrating diversity and individuality in her artistry, which is portrayed in the artwork.
Currently, FunkyKid is working on her new project, which will be an album to be released in 2025.
Salma, as an artist, is an artivist, using her platform to speak against injustices that minorities go through and being very outspoken with her political views. She inherently believes that music is political, a conviction that dictates how she makes art. On November 18, 2023, she contributed a track called “Drum & Watermelon” to the Ceasefire compilation organized by Berlin’s L-KW collective. All proceeds from this project go directly toward distributing dignity kits to women and families affected by the Israeli war crimes in Gaza. Funkykid is also a resident in Voices Radio, UK-based, doing a monthly show every second Thursday. She leverages this platform to give space to underground DJs she likes, offering them the opportunity to make a mix for Voices Radio.
In October 2023, she co-founded Rush Berlin, a video and streaming project aiming to showcase Flinta* and BIPoC DJs in Berlin.
FunkyKid is thrilled to announce the release of his first single entitled “The Space In Between.” After over two years of serious music production, Funky Kid finally has the confidence to let this vibrant track out into the world. The single is now available on all streaming platforms.
The Space In Between” is really a celebration of life, club music, and the culture of clubs in all their glory. Playful, energetic, and full of vibes, the song serves as a positive reaction to the 8-month depression of Funky Kid that started last October.
Mixed by herself, mastered by @jamesfishmusic, the track is able to blend inspiring beats with infectious rhythm in a way that’s fully unique.
